Job Description
The Land Guardian position is responsible for monitoring the physical works, conducting cultural preliminary field reconnaissance’s and participating in archaeology field work occurring in the Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation territory. These projects include highway, railway, mining, and other infrastructure projects. In addition, there are numerous other industry operations occurring, such as forestry, that will require cultural field assessments.
The work schedule is generally for 8-hours, however, project needs, and unforeseen circumstances, will require technicians to work variable hours. Work is to start as soon as training and development of 4-10 successful individuals has completed but the pace at which it will progress is based on what is found and how long it takes to conduct required archaeological and cultural assessments.
The cultural field technicians will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the job site with travel reimbursement provided by the employer. Lastly, the Cultural Field Technicians are to attend any project site meetings at a time pre-determined with each Project Site Supervisor. Training for the position will take place in Kluskus IR#1 in early fall, and work will begin as soon as training has completed.

The employee is expected to perform their duties and responsibilities to the best of their abilities, to use good judgement in the performance of these duties and to abide by the policies and regulations of Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation. The employee is also expected to:
General Responsibilities
- Planning and conducting site visits including preliminary field reconnaissance (PFR)
- Assisting archaeologists in archaeology field work
- Gathering and sharing local and traditional knowledge
- Environmental monitoring on construction projects
- Proper field note techniques
- Trip planning and equipment organization
- GPS, iPad, Camera use and operation

- Professional appearance suitable to the position.
- Maintain strict confidentiality relating to all Nation matters and its members.
- Ability to successfully and periodically undergo an appropriate criminal records review and vulnerable sector police record check as required.
- Understand and follow human resources, finance, and any other policies and workplace expectations through behaviours and actions aligned with the culture and values of Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to complete the education program in its entirety to build knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in related monitoring activities.
- The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills to deal tactfully, courteously within the team of project site workers and contractors.
- Enthusiastic, positive attitude.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in teams of 2 in an isolated environment.
- Ability to analyse and troubleshoot.
- Good judgement to perform duties as assigned and work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to keep required records of the monitoring findings and observations conducted on each work site.
- Sufficient physical strength, stamina, and coordination to perform manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- The successful applicant will provide proof of a valid at minimum Class 5 BC Driver’s license or demonstrate access to reliable transportation.
- Knowledge of the Lhoosk’uz Dené history and culture is an asset.
