Job Description

The Community Health Nurse is responsible for delivering holistic, culturally safe health services in Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation, a remote and resilient Indigenous community in central British Columbia. As a key member of the Health Department, the Nurse provides primary care, public health, home care, and health promotion services to those who live in the community.

In this role, the Nurse plays an essential part in health prevention, treatment, education, and emergency response, while fostering respectful, trusting relationships with individuals, families, Elders, and health system partners. The Nurse is committed to supporting the well-being of the community in alignment with Lhoosk’uz Dené values, culture, and traditions.

This position is a full-time position, as outlined in the personnel policies of the organisation. The Community Health Nurse position is renewed on an bi-annual basis subject to the completion of a performance review and adequate financial resources available to support the position.

Responsibilities

The employee is expected to perform their duties and responsibilities to the best of their abilities, to use good judgement in the performance of these duties and to abide by the policies and regulations of Lhoosk’uz Dene Nation. The employee is also expected to:

Clinical and Community-Based Health Services
  • Provide frontline nursing care in areas of urgent/emergency response, primary care, chronic disease support, and home care.
  • Report to work at the Kluskus School Clinic and maintain a safe, clean, and professional clinical environment.
  • Monitor homes and community members to identify health concerns or risks and respond with appropriate nursing interventions, education, or referrals.
  • Conduct home visits to support clients and monitor their well-being, particularly for elders, people with chronic illness, and vulnerable individuals.
  • Maintain an inventory of medical supplies, recording what is received and distributed, and ensuring supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Assess clinic infrastructure, flag equipment or facility needs, and support safe and effective service delivery.
  • Ensure the integration of Health Board policies, contribution agreement deliverables, and FNHA standards into day-to-day operations.
Community Outreach and Education
  • Educate individuals, families, and groups on healthy lifestyles, chronic disease prevention, and wellness promotion using a holistic, culturally relevant approach.
  • Support health promotion initiatives including immunization campaigns, sexual health education, harm reduction efforts, and maternal/child health.
  • Coordinate and host community health events, clinics, and workshops in collaboration with the Health Director.
  • Provide up-to-date and community-relevant resources, and support the integration of traditional medicines and healing practices where appropriate.
  • Monitor and respond to emergencies, epidemics, and public health threats, liaising with regional public health teams when needed.
Client Advocacy and Coordination
  • Act as a liaison between patients, families, the community, and external health care providers to ensure coordinated, respectful, and informed care.
Policy Development and Compliance:
  • Develop, organize, and update educational policies to align with provincial standards and the cultural values of the Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation.
  • Ensure that all school operations, programs, and practices comply with relevant education standards, privacy legislation, and industry-specific regulations.
  • Advocate for and implement innovative educational programs and interventions that drive student success.
  • Support clients in navigating the health system, understanding their conditions and treatment plans, and accessing available programs and benefits (e.g., NIHB).
  • Assist in the coordination of medical appointments and transportation, distribute itineraries and forms, and ensure clients are supported throughout their care journey.
Administrative Support:
  • Report to the Health Director and provide administrative support as needed.
  • Complete and distribute all correspondence.
  • Maintain current, accurate client data, and secure files and records, and manage administrative documents.
  • Attend all Health Board meetings.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and secure client health records in compliance with all relevant legislation and policies.
  • Assist in proposal writing for additional funding for the community and coordinate applicable workshops and training events.
  • Develop and submit monthly activity reports to the Health Director.

  • Comply with legal obligations, professional, ethical, and organizational standards to ensure privacy, security, and confidentiality in the access, retention, storage, and disposal of personal health information.
  • Follow and guide others to follow all Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation policies and procedures.
  • Professional appearance suitable to the position.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality relating to all Nation matters and its members.
  • Ability to successfully and periodically undergo an appropriate criminal records review and vulnerable sector police record check is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Indigenous health frameworks, the First Nations Perspective on Wellness, and a commitment to cultural humility.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to work with clients who may be experiencing trauma, loss, or health inequities.
  • Clinical competency across primary care, public health, and home care settings.
  • Familiarity with health record systems (paper and electronic), Panorama, and point-of-care diagnostic tools.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
  • Current registration in good standing with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Remote Certified Practice designation (or willingness to obtain).
  • CPR (BLS) required; ACLS and other emergency certifications are assets.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
  • Understanding or knowledge of holistic approaches or traditional medicines roles.
  • 2 years of nursing experience in community health, public health, rural/remote practice, or emergency care is preferred.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities or in culturally diverse settings is preferred.
