The Chief provides leadership for the Nation, represents members, works with Council, and helps make decisions that support the community today while planning for future generations.

Who Can Run for Chief?
To run for Chief, you must:
- Be a registered member of Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation for at least five years.
- Be 18 years of age or older on the day of the election.
- Not have been removed from the position of Chief or Councillor under the Custom Election Code within the past six years.
- Not have been convicted of a violent or sexual offence.
- Not have been found liable by a court or tribunal for fraud, theft or another dishonest act.
- Not owe money to the Nation.
- Agree to abstain from alcohol and recreational drugs during your campaign and, if elected, throughout your term as Chief.
- Agree to abstain from excessive gambling or games of chance involving real money during your campaign and, if elected, throughout your term as Chief.
These requirements are set out in the Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation Custom Election Code.
What Do I Need to Submit?
If you wish to run for Chief, you must submit the following no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2026:
- A written statement confirming your intention to stand for election as Chief.
- Confirmation that you meet the eligibility requirements set out in the Custom Election Code.
- Proof of a Criminal Record Check.
Applications must be submitted to: elections@lhooskuz.com
What Happens After I Apply?
Once nominations close, all applications will be reviewed to confirm that candidates meet the requirements of the Custom Election Code.
After the review is complete, the official list of candidates will be published.
If only one eligible candidate is nominated, that person will be declared elected by acclamation and the Community Election Meeting will be cancelled.
If more than one eligible candidate is nominated, the election will proceed on August 27, 2026.
Before voting begins, each candidate will have up to 10 minutes to introduce themselves, share their vision for the Nation, and speak to voting members.
How Is the Chief Elected?
The Chief is elected at the Chief Election Meeting.
Eligible members may participate either in person or virtually, in accordance with the Election Notice and the Custom Election Code.
The candidate who receives the most votes will be elected Chief.
Who Can Vote?
Voting members who are 18 years of age or older on the date of the election are eligible to vote.
