Members of Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation may be eligible to apply for the 2026 First Nations Wildland Firefighter Bootcamp, a partnership between the Tsilhqot’in National Government (TNG) and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
This bootcamp offers the same training as a standard BCWS firefighter program, but in a smaller, more supportive group setting. Since it began in 2019–2020, the program has seen strong results. Several past participants have gone on to work with BCWS or with local wildfire response crews, including teams like Alkali Resource Management.
The main goal of this program is to create a direct pathway for First Nations participants to be hired by BCWS. It also supports skill-building, strengthens relationships between BCWS and First Nations communities, and encourages long-term partnerships and community involvement.
Program Overview
- Duration: 6-day camp
- Location: T7 Ranch (near Anaham and Alexis Lake)
- Seats Available: 10 (across TNG membership)
- Delivery: Daily morning fitness, classroom instruction, and field training
- Certifications: S-100 and S-185 provided
Participants will be required to successfully pass the national wildfire fitness test to be eligible for hire with BCWS. First Aid is required for hiring but is not required to attend the bootcamp.
Eligibility
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Completed Grade 12 or GED
- Prefer Class 5 or 7 drivers license (but not required)
- Occupational First Aid 2, & Transportation Endorsement or OFA 3
What’s Provided
TNG will supply all required participant supports, including:
- Fire boots and Nomex
- Personal first aid kits
- Food and lodging for the duration of the camp
